Week 3: Duties, Dedication, and Development

Weekly Reflection
Week 3 (28 July 2025 – 01 August 2025)

Day 1 (28/07/2025)

The third week of my teaching practice began with the familiar rhythm of the morning assembly, where the school community gathered in unity. The day progressed according to my timetable, with my scheduled classes going smoothly. I was also assigned substitution periods, which allowed me to engage with students from other classes and adapt my teaching approach to different age groups. As part of our routine duties, I, along with my peers, carried out the noon meal distribution, ensuring students were served in an orderly and timely manner. Later, we managed student dispersal, guiding them safely out of the school premises. The day ended with a sense of quiet accomplishment.

Day 2  (29/07/2025)

Today was an energetic and multifaceted day, balancing academic responsibilities with the excitement of sports activities. Due to a shortage of teachers, I handled several substitution periods, making sure learning continued effectively in those classes. The remainder of the day was filled with supervising and coordinating athletic competitions, including football, volleyball, and badminton, across different categories of students. These events not only showcased students’ talents but also fostered teamwork and sportsmanship. Despite the hectic schedule, I ensured my noon meal duty and student dispersal responsibilities were fulfilled with care. We concluded the day at 5:00 p.m., feeling both physically tired and mentally satisfied after contributing to both academics and extracurricular activities.

Day 3  (30/07/2025)

The morning carried a somber atmosphere as the entire school observed a moment of silence at 9:45 a.m. to remember the 53 students who tragically lost their lives in the Puthumala landslide. The tribute, marked by a two-bell ceremony, filled the environment with a sense of empathy and reflection. My day included both my regular teaching periods and additional substitution duties. There was also a visit from DEO Office staff for inspection, which added to the day’s seriousness. Although I was still recovering from the busy sports schedule of the previous day, I remained active in my responsibilities—helping with the midday meal distribution, updating academic records, and supervising student dispersal. The day concluded at 4:15 p.m., leaving me with a blend of emotional depth and professional fulfillment.

Day 4  (31/07/2025)

This was a relatively calm yet engaging day. In addition to my regular classes and substitution periods, the highlight was participating in the conduct of a quiz competition in the afternoon. Under the guidance of Sajeev Sir and our mentor, Smitha Teacher, the competition aimed to prepare students for the upcoming sub-district level contests. The event was lively, with enthusiastic participation from students, and it provided me with a valuable opportunity to learn event management skills in an academic setting. We continued with our usual duties of meal supervision and student dispersal, maintaining the daily rhythm of school life.

Day 5  (01/08/2025)

Today stood out as a milestone in my teaching practice—the observation visit by my optional teacher, Dr. Praveena. I was informed the previous night, so I prepared thoroughly and arranged to swap a period, as my timetable for Friday did not have a second-period class in 9B. With the support of my mentor, Mrs. Smith S., and the cooperation of my students, the class setting was encouraging and positive. Initially, I felt slightly tense, aware of being observed, but once I began teaching, my focus shifted to the lesson and the students’ engagement, which made the nervousness disappear. For the observation, I took the topic "Swallowing", using an ICT-based lesson plan. I followed the plan meticulously, integrating visuals and interactive elements to enhance student engagement. After observing my session, Dr. Praveena also observed my peer David’s class during the third period. She provided valuable feedback, pointing out my positive aspects, such as classroom engagement and clear explanations, while also giving constructive suggestions for improvement. Her words were both encouraging and instructive, boosting my confidence and giving me clear directions for refining my teaching strategies.

Week 3 was a balanced mix of routine teaching, active participation in school events, and professional growth, highlighted by my observation session with Dr. Praveena, whose constructive feedback boosted my confidence and guided my teaching improvement.
